Instructors: Tip of the Week: Exporting Grades to SiRIUS

Exporting Grades to SiRIUS
Use the following instructions to export midterm and final grades from the Blackboard Grade Centre so they can be loaded into SiRIUS.
First, refer to SESD’s instructions for entering final grades. Pay particular attention to the section called “Copy and Paste Grades from a Spreadsheet”.
Then, use these instructions to export the grades.
Select “Grade Center” then “Full Grade Center” from the instructor’s course management control panel in the bottom left of your browser window.
Select the “Work Offline” button from the upper-right corner of the grade center.
Select “Download” to download the grade center to a spreadsheet.
In Section 1 (Data) select “Selected Column” then in the dropdown box select which column contains the final grades. This will let you export just the grades you need for SiRIUS.
For “Delimiter Type” select “Comma”. This makes it easier to load into MS-Excel.
Select “Submit” then “Download” to download this file.
Open the saved file in Excel (or your favorite spreadsheet program)
Delete all columns except for “Student ID” (the student number) and the grade column. In Excel you do this by right-clicking on the column heading then select “Delete”.
Follow SESD’s instructions given in the PDF document to copy the student numbers and grades and paste them into SiRIUS.
Note that in combined courses, you don’t have to separate out the students. SiRIUS will ignore any extra students in the grade list.

Instructors: Tip of the Week: Scholar on Blackboard

Blackboard has announced that the “Scholar” social bookmarking system will be shut down on January 13, 2012. Instructors currently using Scholar are encouraged to use other services such as http://www.delicious.com/ for social bookmarking.
ITS will be removing the “Scholar” tab from the top menus on December 23 after all the September term courses and exams are finished. On January 13, ITS will also remove all the Scholar tools from courses including the links to “Scholar Stream”, “Scholar Bookmarks” and the “My Scholar Home” tools because these will no longer function once the Scholar system is shut down.
Instructors currently using Scholar are encouraged to contact the ITS help desk (help.desk@usask.ca) for assistance in moving from Scholar to another system.
