Setting up Alerts on lists and libraries

Now that the new SharePoint Special Interest Group site has been set up, you may be wondering whether you can stay informed about new posts or events without having to constantly check the site.  There are two ways available; Alerts and RSS feeds.  Anybody can set these up for automatic notifications on new or changed material being posted.

To set an alert:
  • Go to the library or list where you want the alert (e.g. Calendar or Announcements)
  • In the ribbon, click on the tab named Library, List or Calendar, depending on where you are
  • Click on the “Alert me” icon
  • Choose “Set Alert on this List” from the drop-down
  • Fill out the Alert form; it will send an e-mail to the e-mail account that you specify
  • Choose which types of changes you want to be alerted about
  • You can choose to have it send the e-mail immediately, a daily summary or a weekly summary

Setting an RSS feed is similar, and is handy if you already use RSS:
  • Go to the library or list (e.g. Calendar or Announcements)
  • In the ribbon, click on the tab named Library, List or Calendar, depending on where you are
  • Click on the “RSS Feed” icon
  • Click on “Subscribe to this feed”
  • Choose which folder to put the feed into
  • The new RSS feed will be available under the RSS icon in your browser

If you have questions about alerts or RSS feeds, please let me know.
