Creating a drop-down in the Top Links bar

At the last SIG meeting, Ken showed that the ICT site has a drop-down menu on the Services link in the Top Links bar.  The Top Links bar is displaying the subsites under the main ICT site collection, and the drop-down is diplaying the subsites under each subsite.  This capability is a built-in feature of SharePoint.

First of all, to make this work, the site must have the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure feature turned on.  If it is not turned on, you will not be able to see the “Navigation” link in the Site Settings.  To do this:

  • Go to the site collection
  • Go to the Site Actions menu and choose Site Settings
  • Click on the “Site Collection Features” link in the Site Collection Administration section
  • Locate the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure entry
  • Click the Activate button

Once you have turned on SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure:

  • Go to the site collection
  • Go to Site Actions and choose Site Settings
  • Click on the Navigation link in Look and Feel
  • In the Global Navigation section, check “Show subsites”
  • Click OK
  • You will notice that the subsites are now appearing in the Top Links bar
  • For each subsite where you want a drop-down to appear
    • Go to Site Settings and click on the Navigation link
    • In the Global Navigation section, ensure that “Display the same navigation items as the parent site” is selected
    • Check “Show Subsites”
    • Click OK
  • Return to the site collection; the drop-down should now be available
