Sharing Files from Silo with Globus Connect Server

I’ve previously mentioned Globus, the service that allows you to transfer files to/from/between WestGrid sites from a handy web application. That article can be found here.

Compute Canada recently started rolling out a new service from Globus, called Globus Connect Server, that further enhances this application. The main benefit from the new Globus Connect Server is file sharing.  With this, you will be able to share files from any WestGrid site and make them available to anyone, anywhere, as long as they have a free Globus account.  It is currently only configured to share from Silo, however.

The process is well documented on the Globus website.

A point specific to WestGrid, though. In order to activate your endpoint, you need to have your account set up on the WestGrid MyProxy server. The details are available on the WestGrid website at: https://www.westgrid.ca/support/grid_tools/proxies, but the quick and dirty version is to log into Bugaboo and run the command ‘myproxy-init -c 0’, then enter your WestGrid password when prompted.  You will then be asked for a MyProxy pass phrase, which is what you will enter on the Globus website when activating the endpoint.  We generally recommend that you use the same passphrase for both WestGrid and your MyProxy. You will only need to do this once per year, when your account gets renewed.  In the future, this will be greatly simplified.

In order to activate sharing for your Globus account, please contact us at research_computing@usask.ca and we’ll help get set up to share.
