Suddenly and without any warming, the commercial herring fishery recently stated to the Heiltsuk First Nation that stocks are too low to support the high harvest levels. Several RCMP and federal Department of Fisheries (DFO) boats were nearby to discourage protests from taking place. A DFO spokesperson could not be reached immediately for comment.

The Government of Canada recently announced support through the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor) for Aboriginal business development and growth in seven Northern Ontario First Nation communities. The $922,250 investment will be distributed to Wakenagun Community Futures Development Corporation and the Mushkegowuk Council.
