Interim Liberal leader Bob Rae has introduced a motion to repeal the 136 year old Indian Act and replace it with something better suited to today’s realities. Rae claims that his motion is based on extensive talks with aboriginal leaders as does Conservative MP Rob Clarke, who sponsored a private members bill of his own regarding the Indian Act.
Perry Bellegarde, Chief of the Little Black Bear First First Nation has been elected Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN). Bellegarde, who had served two previous terms as FSIN Chief in 1995 and 1998 was elected by a 2 to 1 margin over his nearest challenger, Delbert Wapass.
Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo joins First Nations citizens in celebrating the canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Indigenous woman from North America to become a saint. She was born in what is now New York State, but spent most of her short life in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake, Quebec.
The 2013 Inspire Awards, formerly known as the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards announced fourteen recipients recently.The awards ceremony takes place February 15th, 2013 at Sid Buckwold Theatre, TCU Place in Saskatoon, SK.

The Seventh Annual Manito Ahbee Festival and Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards will take place October 31st to November 4th, 2012 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The festival will showcase the talents, gifts and abilities of Aboriginal artists from all nations.
