Class of 2010 honoured at Spring Awards

WCVM Dean Dr. Douglas Freeman presents the WCVM Faculty Gold Medal certificate to Lindsey Kurach during the College's spring awards program on June 2.
After four years of challenges and hard work, the 70 members of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s Class of 2010 had the chance to celebrate on June 2 during the College’s spring awards program in Saskatoon, Sask.
Nearly $44,000 worth of scholarships and awards were handed out to the senior students as well as to graduate students and faculty during the evening. The highlight was the WCVM Faculty Gold Medal presentation to Lindsey Kurach, who had received the good news earlier in the day during the University of Saskatchewan’s Spring Convocation.
The Faculty Gold Medal is the veterinary college’s most prestigious award for its undergraduate students. The honour is annually presented to the graduating veterinary student who has displayed the highest general proficiency in the science and art of veterinary medicine during the four-year program.
During the program, the WCVM announced the Dr. Bernard Boisvert Memorial Scholarship — a new award that was created through generous donations from the friends and family of Dr. Bernard Boisvert, who died on June 29, 2009. Germaine Hung was the first recipient of the $2,250 award that recognizes a senior student in the DVM program who excels in and promotes client-patient communication. The selected student also demonstrates clinical excellence, keen insight and good judgment.
The award was established in memory of Boisvert (WCVM ’79) who began Mission Ridge Animal Hospital in St. Albert, Alta., in 1979. Besides operating his successful practice, Boisvert was the veterinarian at Valley Zoo in Edmonton, Alta., for more than a decade and served as president of the Edmonton Association of Small Animal Veterinarians. In addition, Boisvert was founding member of the Canadian Veterinary Ophthalmology Association and a board member of the Canadian Academy of Veterinarian Dermatology.
